The Self-directed Support Act aims to provide local authorities with a power to support carers in their caring role. This section provides further information for Carers and the support available through Self-directed Support.

Carers Assessments

Carers who care on a regular and substantial basis and who do not necessarily stay with the cared for person, can at any time request from local authorities a formal assessment of their support needs as a carer.

A carer’s assessment can result in the provision of services, either to the cared-for person or in some cases directly to the carer.

Carers who have not been assessed or feel their circumstance have changed and need re-assessed should contact their social work department.
